Appalachian Spring

MAY 13, 2024

Appalachian Spring is an American ballet created by the choreographer Martha Graham and the composer Aaron Copland, later arranged as an orchestral work. Appalachian Spring tells the story of a young frontier couple on their wedding day. Created as the war in Europe was drawing to end, the ballet captured the imagination of Americans who were beginning to believe in a more prosperous future, a future in which men and women would be united again.

The Appalachian Mountains, often called the Appalachians, are a mountain range in eastern to northeastern North America. Here, the term 'Appalachian' refers to several different regions associated with the mountain range, and its surrounding terrain. The range is older than the other major mountain range in North America, the Rocky Mountains of the west. The mountains are the home of a very popular recreational feature, the Appalachian Trail. This is a 2,175-mile (3,500 km) hiking trail that runs all the way from Mount Katahdin in Maine to Springer Mountain in Georgia, passing over a large part of the Appalachian range.

There is another trail running from the mountains to the sea and is called just that. The Mountains-to-Sea Trail is North Carolina's flagship state trail and will be 1400 miles long when it is finished. It runs from the Clingman's Dome in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to Jockey's Ridge State Park.

Before I go to work at 7.30 in the morning, I am able to walk a couple of miles on this trail to Rattle Snake Lodge and find myself totally immersed in the oxygen rich blue mountains close to Asheville. The title Appalachian Spring came up as a title for some small paintings with typical spring flowers.
